Conversion rate or site design? Do you have to choose?
Sometimes, yes you do.
I talked with a prospective client who said he wanted to increase his conversion
rate – he had his site redesigned but he was still not getting any leads from
it. I took a look at the site and it was very well done but there were still a
lot of problems.
The most obvious problems are:
- Use of jargon – A lot of companies assume you know what their jargon
means and most people don’t.
- Too graphic – The graphic on the home page is too large and it pushes
the persuasion area down below the page fold.
- Keywords - Where are they?
- The text on the home page does not really tell me what the company does. It
does not persuade me to do anything. This site did have a photo of a user
on the main page that went into a testimonial – that was much better and more
persuasive.
- Help me choose - Link to a page that will help the
customer choose which product is best for them.
- Testimonials - Do you have any? These work great on lead-generation
web sites.
- I feel the request for information on this page is premature.

"Theresa - I just wanted to let you know how much my business has increased since you took over my website. What I am delighted about is that I am
receiving good, solid business leads from my target audience. How do you do that?" Sylvia Watson, President, Healing Environments with Feng Shui |
"I wanted to let you know that our rankings on Google are now in the top 3, on almost every search we've conducted (most of them are in 1st place)—without using quotes to call out specific phrases.
This is in searches that result in over 20,000 pages per search. We're backlogged with orders until late June, possibly July. You ROCK!” Diana Holycross, Tiles with Style."
