Introductory comments

I volunteer my time to help out professional groups that try to help women succeed. In one of these groups, I met a woman who does a lot of blog marketing. I am fascinated by using technology to promote your business and web site so I am working with her to help her promote her business. While we were chatting on the phone, she asked me to explain what I do. After I told her, she suggested that I write an e-book with some conversion tips. So I am! Also while we were talking, she asked me some SEO questions for one of her clients so that brings me to the question for this month.

Question of the month

Question: She told me about a client who is working with an SEO company in the Columbus, OH area. This company gave him a list of keywords to put anywhere in his web site. He is asking the company on a monthly basis why his site is not moving up in the rankings on search engines, they repeatedly tell him to wait another three months. She asked me what I thought of his situation and I told her I thought he was being ripped off.

Answer: I don’t know all the details of his situation, all I know is what she told me. But a “good” SEO company would not just give the client some keywords to pepper around in his web site. They would tell him where to put the keywords in his site text. When I checked out his web site, he had no main page text! Any SEO company that knows anything would tell a client that he should have main page text because that is where the search engines look for keywords. Also, once you redesign a site, it should not take but a few weeks for you to see it move up through the rankings in Google. So these practices make me think that this SEO company is not very reputable.

For organic SEO results, the Title tag and main page text are the most important place to put keywords. If you are going to pay for position or pay per click, then it does not matter.
