Introductory comments
This month I wanted to talk about web site conversion and working with
clients.
Question of the month
One thing I have noticed about working with web site conversion is that many
if my clients don’t really understand it. They think that as soon as I do a
couple things to their site, the money will be rolling in. And when that does
not happen, they start complaining.
Getting people to buy your products or contact you for business is a very
complex process. You have to find just the right formula to entice that user to
contact you. How do you know what will appeal to them? You don’t. You try an
idea, test it, and if it does not work, try something else. There are over 1000
variables that can affect conversion. And it can be a long process.
One of my client’s was very happy after a site redesign and her users started
contacting her. I asked her to please keep track of all her emails and completed
web forms and let me know monthly what those numbers were. She never would give
me that information. She started complaining that no one was buying her
services. I reminded her that she had some fundamental things wrong with her
site:
- She refused to list the price of her services on her web site.
- She refused to take credit cards on her site to allow people to buy her
merchandise.
These two points may not seem that significant to most, but severely impact
the conversion rate on her site. As far as web site conversion, this site is a
success: this client had no contacts before I redesigned her site and now she
has many emails from users.
Could the site be more effective? Definitely. When your client base contacts you
– they want information from you. This is a perfect opportunity to contact them
and sell them on your services.
Building a profitable site is not something that can be accomplished in a
vacuum. It takes effective communication between client and web designer. If
your client is not helping you, you cannot effectively help them.

"Theresa - I just wanted to let you know how much my business has increased since you took over my website. What I am delighted about is that I am
receiving good, solid business leads from my target audience. How do you do that?" Sylvia Watson, President, Healing Environments with Feng Shui |
"I wanted to let you know that our rankings on Google are now in the top 3, on almost every search we've conducted (most of them are in 1st place)—without using quotes to call out specific phrases.
This is in searches that result in over 20,000 pages per search. We're backlogged with orders until late June, possibly July. You ROCK!” Diana Holycross, Tiles with Style."
