March ABCs of Web Design Newsletter
In this month’s newsletter –
*Introductory comments
*Question of the month
*Wrap up
I just completed my latest web article called “Just Say No to SEO
Spam” –it will be published in June. It was a lot of fun researching an
article on all the questionable things some SEO specialists do to attain
high rankings. I recently attended an AMA seminar "7 Secrets to High
Google Rankings - for Marketers -- Getting Google to Love Your Website."
They too talked about being leery of any company guaranteeing rankings
within a certain time period. So be careful! On to the question…
Question: Luci emailed and asked: “Why is link popularity so
important? Does it really affect your site rankings in search engines?”
Answer: Great Question! Link pages are always a great way to
gain site traffic. When I was the webmaster for the OKIT site, I began the
links page with only one link. When I turned the site maintenance over to
Liz and Jim at OKIT, the links page contained over 500 links. The site
was generating more traffic from the linked sites than all the search
engines combined – and that was a lot of traffic. At first I had to
scour the internet looking for Native American sites to link to but as
OKIT site’s popularity grew, I had sites emailing me asking to be on the
links page. It was also the most viewed page on the entire site. So
building your links page with relevant links is a very good idea!
Now Google and most major search engines use link popularity as an
important ranking criterion. At Google, they call it PageRank (PR), which
has been its hallmark since 1998. PR evaluates Web structure through link
analysis to determine relevancy. It's an algorithm factor that gives
higher rankings to sites with many strong, quality links leading to
their pages. Such sites are deemed to be highly relevant because of all
the incoming links.
If you are interested in finding out how many sites link to your site,
go to Google and type in “+site.com” replacing site.com with your URL
minus the http:// and the www. For example, for my site: +w-edge.com.
This gives me 134 listings of sites linking to my site. I was very
excited to see that two web design classes at the University of Colorado
link to my articles page for web design information. For my next article,
I am planning to discuss link popularity and the spamming that goes along
with it.
I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful March – I cannot wait for
spring to get here! Feel free to email me any questions! Thanks for reading my
newsletter!

"Theresa - I just wanted to let you know how much my business has increased since you took over my website. What I am delighted about is that I am
receiving good, solid business leads from my target audience. How do you do that?" Sylvia Watson, President, Healing Environments with Feng Shui |
"I wanted to let you know that our rankings on Google are now in the top 3, on almost every search we've conducted (most of them are in 1st place)—without using quotes to call out specific phrases.
This is in searches that result in over 20,000 pages per search. We're backlogged with orders until late June, possibly July. You ROCK!” Diana Holycross, Tiles with Style."
