Introductory comments

I just added some ponds to my back yard and landed a part-time technical writing gig (for those who have asked how the feng shui is working -- so yes it is working!). I have also been working on search engine optimization for a few clients – I recently completed an entire site redesign for a ceramic tile site, called Tiles with Style. The original site was done in frames thus the search engine spiders could not crawl the site. Also, the old site did not use text effectively to “sell” the products (the tile is absolutely gorgeous!) so I rewrote all site text to not only make the spiders happy, but customers as well adding lots of calls to action. So my question comes from Diane of Tiles with Style…

Question of the month

Question: "Theresa, Do you know how long it will be before my web site is back in the search engines? I've tried to search using Google and it still pulls up my old pages. It doesn't find me at all when I search on Tiles with Style and I used to be 2nd in the standings. Diane"

Answer: Some background information: Diane originally used Submit-It service to promote her original framed site. So the original site was crawled and listed on search engines. 

When I completed the redesign of the site, I re-registered with all “free” search engines and directories. Once you re-register, you have to wait for the spiders to come back to your site and crawl your site again. If the old site is still listed, like it was in this case, it may not work properly depending on what page is showing up. For example, I did find Diane’s site on Google (on page 4) linking to a page that I did not know existed on the original site. So that link is now broken because I did not recreate that page with the new design. 

The good news is that Diane’s new site is ranking right beneath this old link and she did buy an ad on Google Adwords for her site name. I started reregistering her site on 10/29 and she is number one on her site name (Tiles with Style) on every major search engine except for Google where she ranks on page 4. It will take a little time but she should rise in the rankings on Google as well.
